MPEG-V

by Molloden on May 20, 2009

Many people say MPEG-V is one of the most exciting things happening in the Virtual World space right now, but what is is and why is it so exciting?

The purpose of MPEG-V is to standardize intermediate formats and protocols for “Information exchange with Virtual Worlds”, “Interfaces between virtual worlds” and “Interfaces between virtual worlds and the physical world”. In other words, this is a push from a global, well-known and respected standards body to make sure virtual worlds will not end up like the gaming industry with small islands that hope for large scale innovation. With this approch it is possible for virtual worlds to embark on the internet model, with its defined stack, which is a much better example to arrive at the full 3D3C real virtual world.

Now we can only hope that this work do not end up like other important standardisation work that has not led anywhere and missed the purpose of interoperability.

lol several of the reviews many people write make me laugh, many times i wonder if they in fact read the documents and items before writing a comment or whether they only skim the subject of the post and publish the first idea that pops into their brain. anyhow, it is pleasurable to browse through keen commentary once in a while compared to the very same, traditional oppinion vomit which i often discover on the net
